Terrace Planters, London

Powder-coated steel planters, plus privacy screens combining laser-cut steel and frosted glass, for luxury apartment terraces overlooking Green Park and Buckingham Palace.

About the project

We were commissioned by engineering multinational Laing O’Rourke to create bespoke steel planters for six outdoor terraces at Clarges, a super-prime residential development in Mayfair. The client was incredibly open to ideas, and trusted us completely with all aspects of the planters’ design and construction, which had to reflect the project’s prestigious location and flagship status.

Each terrace required seven individual planters. Running along the outer edge, the balustrade planters are set on step bases with concealed LED lighting, and have an anodic bronze powder-coated finish. At each end is an IP65-rated enclosure, made to our own design, containing the lighting drivers and irrigation system. The plants are contained in a powder-coated steel liner, with a single port providing controlled drainage.

The terraces are separated by back-to-back divider planters, designed and engineered to withstand significant wind-loading while meeting the client’s strict requirements for aesthetics, manufacturing and finish. The integral privacy screens, which are 1250mm high by up to 2.6m wide, are made from toughened and frosted SGG BIOCLEAN self-cleaning glass, bespoke-made for us in Belgium, held in a steel frame. On each side is a steel panel, which we laser-cut in-house, following the same pattern as gates and balconies elsewhere on the development.
