A pair of Mild Steel Structure frames supporting slate dry stone walls on this medal winning Chelsea show garden
About the project
For the Terrence Higgins Trust Bridge to 2030 Garden, designed by Matthew Childs Design and built by Yoreland Design, we were commissioned to fabricate these standing steel structures to then be clad with slate dry stone walling.
The initial intent was reasonably developed however we were commissioned to produce a manufacturable design and then, once approved, undertake their fabrication.
The materials chosen were all mild steel, their industrial appearance was left to weather naturally so reminiscent of the redundant slate mines of North Wales that formed part of the inspiration for the garden.
The outer frames of 150mm x 75mm Channel were supported on 10mm thick Base Plates and the inside of the frames clad with 7mm Diameter Rebar mesh sheet
The largest frame being greater than the permissible load size, and also the entrance to the show ground, called for some creative loading and unloading to ensure everything arrived safely and with the use of the vehicle Hi-Ab could be perfectly positioned on the pre cast foundations.
This beautiful show garden was awarded both a Silver Gilt Medal and Best In Show for Construction, both thoroughly well deserved.
