About the project
As part of a major renovation of the outdoor space at The Hub, located at the heart of Farnborough Business Park in Surrey, we were commissioned to design and manufacture a canopy for the front of the iconic Art Deco building.
The technical and design constraints were quite strict. Firstly, the pergola had to be entirely free-standing: The Hub is a Listed Building, which means no new feature can be physically attached to its façade. Secondly, it had to be supplied in kit form, so it could be assembled on-site. Finally, our metalwork had to allow timber cross-sections to be added by a third-party supplier once the structure was in place.
After a lengthy process, we arrived at a final design and method of manufacture. The canopy was made in sections: fully assembled, it’s 7.6m (25 feet) long, 3.5m (11 feet) wide and 2.7m (9 feet) high. Our metalwork alone weighs 1,000kg, with the timber, fitted by our client, adding significantly to the overall weight.
