Bespoke bronze planters for Crown Estate-owned retail premises on the corner of Regent Street and Charles II Street in London.
About the project
The Crown Estate is the Queen’s property manager and when it comes to external works, nothing less than perfection will do. Which is why they keep coming to us.
Our latest commission was a set of bronze planters for the front of a Central London retail property, owned by the Crown Estate, on the corner of Regent Street and Charles II Street. The planters were fabricated in 3mm patinated bronze, fitted with stainless-steel liners, and mounted on sloping plinths to create a perfectly level top edge.
The client specified that the relief profile on the front of each planter had to have knife-edge corners. Taking the easy option and folding the bronze would have created curves with a 6-8mm radius, which would have been unacceptable. Instead, we made each panel from dozens of separate pieces, all individually welded together, then polished to a seamless finish to give precise 90-degree angles.
Regulations also meant the planters couldn’t be physically bolted to the front of the building. To make them secure, we created with a system using tension bolts (like the ones you use to fit a child’s stairgate in a doorway) at each end, cunningly concealed behind removable plates.
As with other similar projects, getting these seemingly simple planters right involved a lot of careful design and high-level fabrication skills. Bronze is a tricky material to work with, but our expertise means we can achieve consistently perfect results, to satisfy the most demanding clients.
