Producing a perfect, crisp join between contrasting metal faces was the biggest challenge in this imposing garden sculpture.
About the project
Sculptor Simon Hempsell commissioned us to fabricate this sculpture for a client’s private garden. Standing 2.1m tall, it comprises two corten steel faces with contrasting mirror-polished stainless steel outer and brushed stainless steel inner surfaces.
Although superficially simple, it’s incredibly challenging to achieve perfectly crisp lines where the different materials meet. Any bleed from the stainless steel filler wire onto the corten surfaces would be immediately obvious after polishing. Our craftsmen had to keep the welds absolutely precise over a total distance of around 20 metres – an exceptionally skilled task, aided by our state-of-the-art welding technology. Very few companies could deliver a project to this standard of perfection, on such a large scale.
