About the project

Gavin McWilliam and Andrew Wilson are two of the country’s leading garden designers, creating bespoke gardens and public landscapes as Wilson McWilliam Studio. They asked us to realise their design for a large asymmetric planter in the centre of a new courtyard garden they were designing in London. Apart from its huge size, at over 3m square, its varying heights, angles and areas posed a number of fabrication challenges to ensure it had the required stability and strength. We made the planter in corten steel, which doesn’t require painting and takes on a stable, rust-like appearance through simple exposure to the elements. The structure was heavily braced internally, providing sufficient rigidity and stability that the contractors could simply concrete it into position.
