About the project

Celebrated garden designer Andy Sturgeon FSGD won a coveted Gold Medal and the Best Show Garden award at the 2016 RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

His garden, built by Crocus for sponsors The Daily Telegraph, drew inspiration from the great geological events that have shaped the Earth and its landscapes. The focal point for the garden was a series of large metal fins, manufactured by Outdoor Designs. Made from bronze, these massive geometric pieces represented an ancient mountain range, with a water feature mimicking a meltwater stream running into a gorge below.

Andy produced a concept drawing, which gave us a sense of his overall vision. His design called for 17 fins in various sizes, up to 3.5 metres high and 2.2 metres across, and leaning at different angles. We went through numerous iterations before we arrived at a method of manufacture that was technically feasible, met Andy’s aesthetic requirements, and satisfied our own high standards.

Next, we used our 3D modelling software to create a computer model of each fin. This ensured that the fabrication team were working to precisely the right spec and dimensions. We also produced a detailed production plan to ensure the deadline was met.

Before we started on the ‘real’ fins, we built a prototype. This was a great opportunity to prove our design and production methods, and iron out any problems early.
