About the project
The client commissioned us to design and manufacture a large bespoke steel planter for a prestigious street in central London. At 2.5 x 2.5 metres, this was one of the biggest such projects we’d ever undertaken. It also incorporated a number of specific, rather unusual features, relating to its intended location, that we had to incorporate into our design.
Firstly, it had to be moveable, even when fully planted. Accordingly, we designed it as two separate structures. The inner framework is fitted with lifting eyes, which were tested prior to installation: with plants and soil, the structure weighs over three tonnes. The framework is also designed to prevent casual access, in line with central London security requirements. Around the top edge of the outer box, we welded rows of tasteful but no-nonsense steel studs, designed to deter enterprising skateboarders and BMX riders!
The whole planter was fabricated in mild steel, galvanised throughout, and with a tough, powder-coated finish on the outer box.
